Handbuch der theologischen Wissenschaften in encyklopädischer Darstellung, mit besonderer Rücksicht auf die Entwicklungsgeschichte der einzelnen Disziplinen: Historische Theologie und Dogmatik

The Handbuch der theologischen Wissenschaften was conceived in the late 19th century as a monumental encyclopedic survey designed to synthesize the state of theological scholarship in Germany. Edited by the theologian Otto Zöckler, the project sought to provide a comprehensive, systematic overview of theology, covering everything from exegesis and historical theology to dogmatics and ethics. It was produced during a time of intense academic rigor in German universities, where the goal was to provide students and clergy with a foundational reference set that mapped the historical development of every major theological discipline.

Zöckler’s editorial vision favored a conservative, confessional approach that stood in contrast to some of the more radical liberal theological trends of the era. By commissioning contributions from various prominent scholars of the time, Zöckler ensured the work functioned as an authoritative academic guide. The volumes were widely received as essential, if dense, pedagogical tools within German-speaking academic circles, intended to bridge the gap between historical scholarship and systematic doctrine for the professional clergy.
