Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life is a psychological thriller manga series written and illustrated by Kagisora Tomiyaki, first serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker magazine starting in 2015. The narrative follows Satou Matsuzaka, a high school student who discovers the true, obsessive meaning of love when she begins living with a mysterious younger girl named Shio, leading to a dark exploration of possessiveness and trauma. The series was conceptualized to subvert the tropes of the 'cute girl' genre, placing sugary aesthetics in direct, unsettling contrast with the protagonist's increasingly violent and manipulative actions.

Kagisora Tomiyaki’s distinct art style, characterized by soft, rounded character designs and a vibrant pastel color palette, was an intentional stylistic choice meant to heighten the dissonance of the series’ horrific themes. Upon its release, the manga was noted by critics for its bold tonal shifts and its unflinching look at complex, unhealthy psychological dependencies. The series garnered a dedicated cult following, eventually leading to a television anime adaptation in 2018 that further solidified its reputation as a standout entry in the darker sub-genres of seinen psychological horror.
