Harisenbon no OL-chan Diary

Harisenbon no OL-chan Diary is a comedic manga series created by the artist M.C. BOO, published within the landscape of Japanese office-worker humor during the late 1990s. The series centers on the daily experiences and misunderstandings of a female office worker, playing on the social dynamics and cultural tropes of the corporate workplace. It emerged during a period when slice-of-life office comedies were finding a dedicated niche in manga magazines, appealing to readers who sought relatable, lighthearted escapism from the rigid structure of Japanese professional life.

The design of the volume reflects the visual style common to gag manga of the era, utilizing exaggerated character expressions and simple, punchy panel layouts to deliver comedic timing. M.C. BOO sought to humanize the protagonist’s mundane struggles through humorous misfortune, crafting an aesthetic that prioritized readability and quick wit. While it remains a niche title, it is recognized among collectors of 90s gag manga for its commitment to character-driven humor and its snapshot of the everyday irritations that defined the experience of an OL (Office Lady) in that decade.
