Where it came from
Hatsukanezumi no Jikan, or The Time of the Field Mouse, represents a departure from the atmospheric, often darker psychological narratives for which Kei Toume is known. Published as a singular volume, the story explores themes of memory, connection, and the quiet persistence of individuals navigating life in a changing urban landscape. Toume utilizes her signature delicate line work and moody ink washes to evoke a sense of fleeting time, creating a visual language that feels both grounded in reality and touched by a soft, melancholy surrealism.
The design and narrative structure of this work reflect Toume's focus on character-driven storytelling, where the environment acts as a silent participant in the plot. Upon its release, the volume was recognized for its artistic maturity, with critics highlighting Toume's ability to imbue mundane settings with deep emotional resonance. It remains a hallmark of her bibliography, valued by readers who appreciate the introspective pace and restrained, evocative compositions that define her illustrative style.
