Haunted Junction

Haunted Junction, created by mangaka Mukudori Nemu, debuted in the late 1990s as a supernatural comedy series serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Asuka Fantasy DX magazine. The series follows a high school student who unexpectedly finds himself acting as a liaison between the living and the dead, tasking him with mediating the affairs of ghosts lingering in his town. Nemu designed the series to blend traditional Japanese folklore with modern high school tropes, focusing on the humorous and often sentimental nature of spirits seeking closure before moving on to the afterlife.

The aesthetic of the series is characteristic of the shōjo and fantasy manga trends of the era, utilizing expressive character designs to balance lighthearted comedy with melancholy supernatural themes. The manga eventually inspired a 12-episode anime adaptation in 1996, which helped solidify its cult status among fans of the genre. While it is often remembered as a niche title, it remains a notable example of the supernatural school-life subgenre that flourished in the mid-90s manga market.
