Where it came from
High Score Girl, created by mangaka Rensuke Oshikiri, began its serialization in 2010. The narrative serves as both a romantic comedy and a love letter to the golden age of arcade gaming in the 1990s. Set against the backdrop of Japan's thriving 'game center' culture, the series tracks the evolving relationship between protagonist Haruo Yaguchi and Akira Oono, a wealthy but socially isolated girl, as their bond is forged through competition in fighting games like Street Fighter II.
Oshikiri’s distinctive, somewhat rough-hewn art style grounds the story in an authentic, nostalgic aesthetic that captures the frantic energy of the arcade scene. The series is celebrated for its deep technical knowledge of classic game mechanics and its heartfelt portrayal of adolescent growth through digital rivalry. Despite facing a significant copyright-related suspension in 2014, the series successfully returned to production, solidifying its reputation as a defining work of pop-culture-infused manga.
