Higurashi Daybreak Portable

Higurashi Daybreak Portable was released for the PlayStation Portable in 2008, serving as a console adaptation of the original doujin PC game developed by 07th Expansion. The game transitions the psychological horror themes of the Higurashi When They Cry series into a high-speed, third-person arena fighting game. It was developed to expand the reach of the series beyond its visual novel roots, offering fans a unique opportunity to engage with the characters in a fast-paced combat environment.

The game's visual identity and character designs were heavily influenced by the work of Maku Ikuma, who provided character illustrations that maintain the distinct, expressive style associated with the franchise. The design process focused on balancing the lighthearted aesthetic of the game's combat mechanics with the underlying tension of the Higurashi narrative. Upon its release in Japan, the title was received as a novel departure for the series, praised by the community for its fluid gameplay and its ability to successfully transpose familiar characters into an unconventional genre.
