Where it came from
Higurashi When They Cry: Meguri serves as a thematic conclusion to the Higurashi Gou and Sotsu anime projects, authored by Ryukishi07 and illustrated by Tomato Akase. The series was published in the Kadokawa Shoten magazine Young Ace Up beginning in 2021, emerging as a manga adaptation that offers a distinct narrative path and resolution compared to the televised Sotsu ending. It was crafted to provide fans with a more detailed exploration of the psychological shifts and causal loops that define the franchise.
The design of the series leans into the established visual language of the When They Cry universe, blending iconic unsettling character expressions with the grounded, rural aesthetic of Hinamizawa. Ryukishi07 intended this work to synthesize the complex, overlapping timelines of the recent anime iterations into a coherent manga format, prioritizing internal logic and character growth. Upon its release, it was received as a definitive supplement for audiences seeking deeper clarification on the motivations of key characters like Satoko Houjou and Rika Furude.
