Where it came from
Serialized in the Japanese josei manga magazine Bessatsu Friend starting in 2000, Hikari to Tomo ni...: Jiheishouji wo Kakaete was authored and illustrated by Keiko Tobe. The series was born out of a desire to provide an accurate, empathetic look at the challenges faced by families raising children on the autism spectrum. Tobe conducted extensive research, consulting with medical professionals and support groups to ensure the narrative felt authentic rather than sensationalized.
The work was highly regarded for its educational impact and sensitive storytelling, eventually winning an Excellence Award at the 2004 Japan Media Arts Festival. Its reception was profound, as it helped bridge a gap in public understanding regarding neurodiversity in Japan. Although Tobe passed away in 2010 before completing the final planned volume, the series remains a landmark in the genre of social-realist manga.
