Where it came from
Hino Hideshi’s Doraemon is an unofficial, unauthorized, and highly surreal reimagining of the iconic children’s manga character Doraemon. Created by Hino Hideshi, a renowned master of Japanese horror manga, the work emerged from the underground landscape of 1980s Japan. It was produced as a subversive tribute, subverting the source material's wholesome, optimistic tone by injecting it with the grotesque and macabre visual style that defines Hino’s bibliography.
The design of this piece is distinctly characterized by Hino’s signature aesthetic—skeletal figures, nightmarish expressions, and a bleak, unsettling atmosphere that stands in sharp contrast to the original series created by Fujiko F. Fujio. Because of its unauthorized nature and controversial tone, the work was never intended for mainstream commercial distribution. It remains a cult curiosity within the manga community, appreciated primarily by collectors of transgressive art and fans of horror subcultures who value Hino’s unique ability to transform a familiar icon into a dark, psychological study.
