Where it came from
Hisashiburi ni Atta Motokano ga Itako ni Natteta, written and illustrated by Umemoto Natsume, is a light novel series that explores supernatural themes through a romantic lens. The narrative centers on the unexpected reunion between a protagonist and his former girlfriend, who has since become an itako, a traditional blind medium from the Aomori region of Japan known for channeling spirits.
Umemoto Natsume crafted this series to blend contemporary slice-of-life tropes with the eerie, historical aesthetics of Japanese folk belief. The design and presentation reflect a trend in modern Japanese publishing where folklore is integrated into personal relationship dramas. Upon its release, the series was noted for its unique premise and the atmospheric quality of its illustrations, which emphasize the contrast between the mundane urban setting and the spiritual practices of the lead character.
