Historya rzymska, or The History of Rome, is the magnum opus of the German classical scholar and historian Theodor Mommsen, first published in installments between 1854 and 1856. Written during a period of burgeoning nationalism in Europe, Mommsen’s work sought to bridge the gap between rigorous academic scholarship and the general public, employing a vivid, often polemical prose style that reflected the political tensions of his own era. The work was so influential that Mommsen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902, the first historian to receive the honor, specifically cited for his monumental achievement in historical writing.

The fourth volume, which covers the final years of the Roman Republic and the rise of Julius Caesar, showcases Mommsen’s characteristic focus on the 'great man' theory of history. Mommsen designed his narrative to draw parallels between the perceived decline of the Roman Republic and the contemporary political state of mid-19th-century Germany. While his work was praised for its brilliance and narrative force upon release, it also drew significant criticism from contemporaries for its overt subjectivity and the author's clear partisan sympathies, which colored his interpretation of ancient Roman political figures and institutional collapses.
