Where it came from
Hitogatana originated as a manga series written and illustrated by Onigunsou, beginning its serialization in 2010 within the pages of Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh. The narrative centers on a world where sentient weapons known as 'Katana' take on human forms, blending elements of high-stakes action with a complex exploration of identity and the bond between weapons and their wielders.
Onigunsou’s design work for the series is noted for its juxtaposition of visceral, sharp-edged combat aesthetics with the distinct, often melancholic character designs of the Katana themselves. The series was developed during a period of rising interest in personified object narratives in manga, and it was received by readers as a moody, character-driven alternative to more lighthearted anthropomorphic genre entries.
