Where it came from
Hiyama Kentarou no Ninshin, or Kentaro Hiyama's First Pregnancy, is a manga series by Eri Sakai that debuted in 2012. The work explores a speculative premise where cisgender men can become pregnant, serving as a social commentary on gender roles, workplace discrimination, and the societal expectations placed upon expectant parents in Japan.
Sakai designed the narrative to challenge traditional domestic dynamics by flipping the biological realities of reproduction. The series received significant critical attention for its blend of humor and poignant social critique, eventually being adapted into a live-action series for Netflix in 2022, which further broadened the international discourse surrounding its themes.
