Host Bibliographic Record for Boundwith Item Barcode 38888104836774 and Others

The 'Host Bibliographic Record for Boundwith Item' represents a common archival practice in academic and research libraries, particularly those transitioning legacy cataloging systems into modern digital databases like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign collection. These records were created to manage physical volumes where multiple distinct pamphlets, journals, or short works were bound together by a previous owner or a library bindery to preserve material and save shelf space, necessitating a single 'host' record to link the various titles.

The design of these records reflects the transition from card catalogs to the MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) standard. Catalogers utilized these records to provide access to heterogeneous collections that might otherwise be obscured. While the system serves a pragmatic archival purpose rather than a singular design philosophy, it is central to the preservation of rare nineteenth and early twentieth-century ephemera that would likely have been lost without this method of consolidated binding and record-keeping.
