Where it came from
Hulk: The Manga was created during a unique period in the 1970s when Marvel Comics sought to expand its international reach by licensing its iconic characters to Japanese creators. Published in Japan by Shuukan Bokura Magazine, this series serves as a distinct reimagining of the Hulk mythos, stripping away traditional American superhero tropes in favor of the darker, more visceral storytelling sensibilities common in gekiga manga.
The series was written by Koike Kazuo, a legend in the manga industry best known for co-creating Lone Wolf and Cub. Kazuo leaned into the psychological anguish of Bruce Banner, placing him in gritty, often surreal scenarios that emphasized isolation and existential horror. While the series remains a cult rarity for Western audiences, it is highly regarded by historians for its stark, unconventional aesthetic and its role as a cross-cultural experiment that bridged the gap between Marvel’s superhero foundations and Japan's storied manga traditions.
