Where it came from
I Am Not Jordan! was created by mangaka Muneo Saito, an artist known for his work in the sports and comedy genres. This volume emerged from a period in Japanese manga where creators often drew inspiration from the global explosion of basketball culture in the 1990s, specifically the influence of NBA icons on international youth culture. Saito utilized the medium to explore themes of identity and fandom through a humorous lens, positioning his protagonist in a relatable struggle against the immense shadow cast by basketball legends.
The design and narrative approach of the series reflect a lighthearted, observational style typical of late-90s gag manga. Saito’s illustrative choices emphasize expressive, exaggerated character reactions to heighten the comedic disparity between amateur aspirations and professional greatness. While it remained a niche title compared to titans of the sports genre like Slam Dunk, it was well-received by readers for its satirical take on sports obsession and its genuine affection for the game.
