Where it came from
Iceman is a manga series authored and illustrated by Kujirai Ikuko, first serialized in the late 1990s. Emerging during a period when shōjo manga was exploring more atmospheric and character-driven narratives, the work reflects the artist's focus on intimate human dynamics and nuanced emotional landscapes. The series is characterized by Ikuko’s delicate linework, which serves to emphasize the internal vulnerability of the protagonists within their specific social contexts.
The design of the series centers on the interplay between stillness and emotional turbulence, a hallmark of Ikuko's aesthetic during this era. Upon its release, it was recognized by readers for its understated tone, diverging from the more melodramatic tropes common in contemporary genre publications. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of late 20th-century manga, it is frequently cited by collectors for its consistency in visual style and its commitment to a restrained, melancholic narrative arc.
