Where it came from
Idiotz, authored by Gary Greenfield, emerged during the late 1980s as a satirical contribution to the novelty literature market. The series was designed to capitalize on the popularity of collectible trading cards and humorous character-driven books that permeated pop culture at the time. Its primary goal was to provide a comedic take on character tropes, utilizing irreverent, cartoonish illustrations to build a small but devoted cult following among fans of underground alternative comics and satire.
The design of the Idiotz characters was heavily influenced by the 'gross-out' aesthetic common in 1980s media, characterized by exaggerated features and slapstick visual gags. Greenfield worked to establish a distinct universe for these characters, focusing on creating accessible humor that blended textual wit with chaotic imagery. While the series did not achieve widespread mainstream critical acclaim, it remains a recognized artifact of late-20th-century novelty publishing and is appreciated by collectors for its niche place in the history of independent, humor-centric volumes.
