Where it came from
Idolm@ster XENOGLOSSIA, a manga adaptation illustrated by Suzukaze Ryou, was released in 2007 to coincide with the broadcast of the Sunrise anime series of the same name. Unlike the original video game franchise, which focused on the lighthearted pursuit of stardom, this version recontextualized the characters within a darker, mecha-centric science fiction setting. The narrative follows Haruka Amami as she navigates a world where giant robots known as iDOLs are used to defend against asteroid threats.
The series represents a distinct experimental phase in the franchise's history. By stripping away the simulation-game tropes of its source material and leaning into a gritty, post-apocalyptic aesthetic, the production team aimed to reach a broader audience beyond established fans. While the departure from the series' core identity was controversial among long-time players at the time of its release, the manga remains a notable artifact of early 2000s attempts to reinterpret established intellectual properties through the lens of the popular mecha genre.
