Where it came from
I'm Really Not Targeting the Mages originated as a popular web novel written by Keys of ten years. It belongs to the broader trend of Chinese web literature that blends elements of game mechanics, portal fantasy, and tactical combat, reflecting a shift in reader interest toward protagonists who prioritize pragmatic optimization and unorthodox strategies within high-fantasy settings.
The narrative focuses on a protagonist who navigates a world structured like an online game, emphasizing the tension between martial strength and magical power. The design and structure of the work are typical of the 'system' subgenre, where character progression is tracked through quantifiable statistics and skill trees, a stylistic choice intended to resonate with an audience familiar with role-playing game conventions and competitive gaming culture.
