Inugamike no Ichizoku

Inugamike no Ichizoku, or The Inugami Family, was originally serialized in the mystery magazine Hoseki starting in 1950. Written by Yokomizo Seishi, the novel introduced his iconic detective, Kindaichi Kosuke, to a post-war Japanese audience grappling with societal shifts and traditional family structures. Yokomizo drew heavy inspiration from the classic Golden Age detective fiction of Western authors like John Dickson Carr, blending atmospheric, gothic horror elements with complex locked-room puzzles that challenged the reader's intellect.

The narrative design focuses on a sprawling inheritance dispute following the death of a wealthy patriarch, characterized by its macabre imagery and mask-wearing antagonists. This specific work became a cornerstone of the mystery genre in Japan, significantly influencing subsequent adaptations in film and manga. Its reception solidified Yokomizo’s reputation as a master of the Japanese whodunit, ensuring the title remained a permanent fixture in Japanese literary culture for decades after its initial release.
