Where it came from
Invaders: The Eve of Destruction collects the 2019 limited series written by Chip Zdarsky, with art by Carlos Magno and Butch Guice. The narrative serves as a modern revival of the classic Marvel team originally created by Roy Thomas in the 1970s, which focused on World War II-era heroes like Captain America, Namor, and the original Human Torch. This volume explores the complex historical baggage of these characters, specifically focusing on the tension between their wartime past and the contemporary Marvel Universe.
The creative team aimed to ground the fantastical premise of these golden-age heroes in a narrative that examined the moral ambiguities of war and the personal toll on individuals with superhuman abilities. By juxtaposing their memories of the 1940s with a modern-day crisis involving the Winter Soldier, the series was well-received by critics for its depth of characterization and its respectful, yet transformative, approach to the legacy of the Invaders, successfully bridging the gap between historical nostalgia and modern storytelling.
