Jane Eyre, The Original 1847 Edition (A Classic Illustrated Novel of Charlotte Bronte)

Jane Eyre was first published in October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. in London under Charlotte Brontë's pseudonym, Currer Bell. Emerging during the height of the Victorian era, the novel broke from tradition by centering on the intense, subjective emotional development of a governess rather than the social manners typical of the period. Its gothic atmosphere, fierce moral independence, and complex critique of class and gender structures made it an immediate sensation upon its release.

The design and narrative structure were shaped by Brontë's desire to portray a woman of small stature and plain appearance who nonetheless possessed an indomitable spirit. By blending elements of the bildungsroman with the dark, moody aesthetics of gothic fiction, Brontë created a character that challenged the literary conventions of the time. While contemporary critics were initially polarized by the book’s raw intensity, it was quickly recognized as a foundational work of English literature and has remained a constant subject of artistic analysis and adaptation.
