Where it came from
Janus no Kagami, or Janus's Mirror, is a classic shōjo manga series originally serialized in the early 1980s by Akiko Miyawaki. The story follows a shy high school girl named Hiromi Ozawa who develops a secondary, rebellious personality after a traumatic experience, leading to a complex psychological drama. The Tatemanga-ban edition is a distinct vertical-format release, reflecting the era's experimentation with manga physical layouts and print experimentation aimed at collectors who appreciated unique book design.
Miyawaki’s work became a cultural touchstone in Japan, particularly after the narrative was adapted into a highly successful live-action television drama in 1985. The manga is celebrated for its exploration of dual identity and the pressures of adolescent life, with Miyawaki’s expressive, dramatic art style serving as a definitive example of the psychological shōjo genre during that period.
