Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary

James Curtis Hepburn, an American medical missionary and linguist, first compiled this dictionary in 1867 during the transition from the Edo period to the Meiji era. His primary motivation was to facilitate communication between the Japanese people and Westerners as Japan emerged from its policy of national isolation. By creating a reliable bridge between the two languages, Hepburn sought to support cultural exchange and the dissemination of Western knowledge.
