Jenaische allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung vom Jahre ...: 1808, 1/3

The Jenaische allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung was a prominent scholarly journal established in 1785 in Jena, Germany. It was founded during the height of the German Enlightenment under the patronage of Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, with Friedrich Justin Bertuch serving as the primary publisher. The journal was designed to provide critical, objective reviews of contemporary literature, philosophy, and science, quickly becoming the most influential literary review in the German-speaking world by positioning itself as the voice of the intellectual elite.

By 1808, the publication had undergone significant shifts in editorial direction and geographical focus, having relocated from Jena to Halle in 1804. The 1808 volume, specifically the early months covered in the first third of the year, reflects the journal's commitment to maintaining a rigorous standard of criticism amidst the political upheaval caused by the Napoleonic Wars. The design and presentation were typical of scholarly periodicals of the era, emphasizing dense, academic prose intended for a subscription base of scholars, university professors, and libraries, rather than the general public.
