Where it came from
Jihanki is a niche manga series written and illustrated by Kohinata Iroha, centered on the theme of vending machines. The work emerged from a broader trend in Japanese slice-of-life storytelling that finds narrative potential in the mundane, elevating everyday infrastructure into a lens through which to observe human connection. It was developed to explore the quiet, fleeting interactions that occur around these automated dispensers in urban spaces.
The artistic style reflects Kohinata Iroha's focus on atmospheric detail, utilizing minimalist framing to emphasize the static presence of the machines against shifting city backgrounds. The design prioritizes a melancholic yet comforting aesthetic, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgia for late-night cityscapes. While the series maintains a specialized audience, it is regarded by critics as a meditative study on the intersection of modern convenience and solitude.
