Where it came from
Jin was serialized in the seinen manga magazine Super Jump from 2000 to 2010. Written and illustrated by Motoka Murakami, the narrative follows Minakata Jin, a brilliant neurosurgeon from the modern era who is transported back in time to the Edo period. Murakami sought to blend historical accuracy with speculative science fiction, carefully researching the medical limitations and societal structures of the Tokugawa shogunate to heighten the tension of Jin's attempts to perform surgery with primitive tools.
The series was met with significant critical acclaim for its nuanced character development and its sensitive exploration of the butterfly effect in history. It earned the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2011, solidifying its reputation as a modern classic of the historical drama genre. Its success led to multiple adaptations, including a highly popular television drama in Japan that further expanded the reach of Murakami’s original vision and solidified its place in contemporary manga history.
