Where it came from
Jinmen was written and illustrated by Takahiro Katou and serialized in the magazine Manga Action starting in 2016. The series belongs to the body-horror subgenre, following a student who discovers that the animals at a local zoo have been replaced or transformed into human-faced entities. It was conceived as a disturbing exploration of dehumanization and survival, utilizing the grotesque visual language characteristic of modern seinen horror.
The character designs in Jinmen are noted for their unsettling juxtaposition of realistic animal bodies with uncanny, hyper-expressive human faces. By blending the familiar form of wildlife with the disturbing intrusion of human features, Katou aimed to challenge the reader's perception of nature and identity. The series was met with interest among horror enthusiasts for its willingness to embrace uncomfortable imagery and its relentless, high-stakes narrative pace.
