Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language, in Miniature: To Which Are Added, an Alphabetical Account of the Heathen Deities, a List of the Cities, Boroughs, and Market Towns in England and Wales ... - Primary Source Edition

Samuel Johnson originally published his monumental Dictionary of the English Language in 1755, a work that served as the standard for the English language for over a century. The miniature editions were developed as practical, portable companions to the original two-volume folio. By condensing the definitions and expanding the utility to include supplementary gazetteers and mythological indexes, these small volumes catered to the growing middle-class reading public who required a convenient reference tool for travel, letter writing, and general education.

The Primary Source Edition referenced here is a modern digital reproduction of these historical texts, intended to preserve the pedagogical landscape of the 18th and 19th centuries. These editions reflect the editorial choices of the era, where dictionary design shifted from purely lexical scholarship to serving as comprehensive cultural handbooks. These miniature volumes are often appreciated by historians for how they encapsulate the period's obsession with standardization and the desire to codify both language and the geography of the British Isles within a single pocket-sized format.
