Johnson's Universal Cyclopaedia; A New Edition

Johnson's Universal Cyclopaedia was first published in the late 19th century as a successor to earlier reference works, aiming to provide a comprehensive and scholarly summary of human knowledge for the American public. Under the editorship of Charles Kendall Adams, a prominent historian and university president, this specific edition sought to reflect the rapid scientific and social advancements of the era. The project was designed to be both authoritative and accessible, gathering contributions from hundreds of experts across diverse academic fields to establish a reliable standard for home and library research.

The design of this cyclopaedia emphasizes a systematic approach to cataloging information, utilizing an editorial strategy that favored clarity and breadth. By inviting specialists to write entries within their respective domains, Adams ensured that the work maintained academic rigor, which helped it gain significant standing among intellectuals and students of the period. While later superseded by the digital age, this series remains a notable artifact of the transition between the Victorian-era appetite for encyclopedic knowledge and the more specialized scholarly structures that defined the early 20th century.
