Josee, the Tiger and the Fish

Originally published in 1984 as a short story in the Japanese magazine Fujin Koron, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish was written by Seiko Tanabe, a celebrated author known for her insightful exploration of human relationships and the complexities of independence. The narrative centers on the intimate and transformative bond between a young woman with a physical disability and a university student, providing a grounded, poignant look at the barriers of societal perception versus personal autonomy.

The story has seen several adaptations, including a 2003 live-action film and a 2020 animated feature by Studio Bones, which brought the work to a wider global audience. Tanabe’s prose remains the bedrock of the project; her writing style is characterized by a dry, sophisticated wit that avoids sentimental tropes, opting instead to present the characters’ struggles and blossoming affection with a nuanced, observational clarity that solidified its status as a contemporary classic in Japanese literature.
