Where it came from
Joséphine, the French Rose was authored by Ochiai Kaoru and emerged within the context of the late twentieth-century Japanese fascination with European historical themes in shōjo manga. Drawing inspiration from the life of Joséphine de Beauharnais, the narrative seeks to blend historical biography with the dramatic, romantic sensibilities characteristic of the period's genre conventions.
The visual design and storytelling approach aim to capture the grandeur and personal complexities of the Napoleonic era through a character-driven lens. Upon its release, the work was received as a stylistic exploration of female agency and political intrigue, contributing to the broader collection of manga that reimagined Western historical figures for a contemporary Japanese audience.
