Joshiraku

Joshiraku is a satirical manga series written by Koji Kumeta and illustrated by Yasu, which was serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from 2009 to 2013. The series follows the lives of five young female rakugo performers who engage in offbeat, rapid-fire banter in their dressing room after their performances. The premise intentionally leans into the contrast between the traditional, disciplined art of rakugo and the characters' tendency to digress into eccentric cultural commentary and modern-day grievances.

Koji Kumeta, known for his cynical and fast-paced comedic style, collaborated with the illustrator Yasu to create a work that functions as both a lighthearted character study and a meta-commentary on Japanese subculture. The series is characterized by its heavy use of text and linguistic wordplay, reflecting the influence of rakugo’s storytelling traditions. While its dense dialogue and niche references presented a challenge for non-native readers, it was well-received within its demographic for its sharp wit and unconventional approach to the slice-of-life genre.
