J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: Scholarship and Critical Assessment

The J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: Scholarship and Critical Assessment was published by Routledge in 2006. Edited by Michael D. C. Drout, a noted scholar of Anglo-Saxon literature and Tolkien studies, the volume was conceived to provide a comprehensive academic resource for the growing field of Tolkien scholarship. It emerged at a time when the academic community was increasingly recognizing Tolkien's work as a central subject for serious literary and linguistic analysis, rather than merely a niche interest of fantasy fandom.

The encyclopedia features contributions from a wide range of international scholars who examine Tolkien's life, his invented languages, and the internal mythology of Middle-earth through the lenses of philology, theology, and literary history. The design and structure of the work were intended to serve as a definitive reference tool, organizing vast amounts of information into scholarly entries. It was well received by the academic community for its rigorous approach and remains a foundational text for students and researchers exploring the depth of Tolkien’s creative output.
