Where it came from
K, published in 1986, is a collaborative masterpiece between writer Shiro Tosaki and artist Jirou Taniguchi. The series follows the eponymous protagonist, a mysterious and stoic mountaineer, as he navigates harrowing peaks across the globe. Conceived during a period of rising interest in seinen manga that prioritized atmospheric storytelling and human resilience, the work stands as a testament to Taniguchi’s signature meticulous line work and his profound ability to capture the sublime, indifferent nature of the wilderness.
The aesthetic of K is defined by Taniguchi’s grounded, realistic approach to the human form contrasted against the stark, imposing geometry of the mountains. By eschewing typical shonen action tropes in favor of quiet, meditative sequences of climbing, the duo aimed to emphasize the spiritual connection between the individual and the mountain. The series was well-received for its artistic rigor and remains a highly regarded entry in Taniguchi’s catalog, particularly for its influence on the survivalist and outdoor adventure genres in manga.
