Where it came from
Kaiju No. 8, written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto, debuted in 2020 on the Shonen Jump+ digital platform. The series quickly became a global phenomenon, noted for its high-octane blend of traditional monster-slaying tropes and modern workplace comedy. Matsumoto designed the protagonist, Kafka Hibino, to subvert the standard shonen hero archetype by making him an older, overlooked man tasked with cleaning up kaiju corpses before finding his chance to join the elite Defense Force.
Volume 7 continues the intense narrative arc of the series, published in English by VIZ Media to keep pace with the ongoing serialization. The cover art captures the series' characteristic aesthetic, which emphasizes fluid, dynamic action sequences and a blend of gritty industrial design with bio-organic creature features. It was received well by audiences who appreciate the series' shift toward darker, more character-driven stakes as the conflict between the Defense Force and the mysterious Kaiju No. 9 escalates.
