Kaimushi Gokkii

Kaimushi Gokkii is a manga series created by Susumu Kobayashi, originating in the late 1980s during a period of experimentation within the seinen manga market. The series focuses on the surreal and grotesque life of its titular character, a bizarre insect-like entity navigating a gritty, urban landscape. Kobayashi utilized a distinct, rough-hewn artistic style to underscore the uncomfortable, satirical themes of the work, which often leaned into dark comedy and body horror.

The series is noted for its idiosyncratic narrative structure, which challenged the standard conventions of the era's gag manga. While it never achieved the widespread mainstream ubiquity of contemporary titles, Kaimushi Gokkii carved out a cult following among readers who appreciated Kobayashi’s unique brand of transgressive humor and his penchant for disturbing, visceral imagery. It remains a notable example of the more experimental side of Japanese comics from the Showa-Heisei transition period.
