Where it came from
Kamen Rider ZX was introduced in 1982 as a 'tenth rider' project for the long-running Tokusatsu franchise, bridging the gap between the Showa-era series. Conceived as a magazine-serial character, the character debuted through a series of photographs and stories in Televi-Kun magazine, written by Azuchi Jou, before being adapted into a televised special in 1984 titled Birth of the 10th! Kamen Riders All Together!!.
The design of ZX, notably the ZX-105 Super Machine, was intended to evoke a more high-tech, cybernetic aesthetic compared to the insect-themed riders of the 1970s. Designed with a distinct ninja motif and a variety of integrated weapons, the character served as a narrative experiment in serialized multimedia storytelling. While initial reactions to the character's varied origin story were complex, the design remains a distinct aesthetic milestone within the franchise's history.
