Where it came from
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko, or By the Grace of the Gods, originated as a serialized web novel published on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting in 2014. The story follows Ryoma Takebayashi, a middle-aged Japanese man who passes away and is reincarnated in a fantasy world, where he is welcomed by gods to live peacefully among slimes. Its transition from a digital web serial to a formal light novel series published by Hobby Japan reflects the broader industry trend of identifying popular online fiction for commercial print adaptation.
The character designs and illustrations for the print release were created by illustrator Ririnra, who provides the soft, pastel-toned aesthetic that defines the series' cozy, low-stakes atmosphere. The visual direction focuses on highlighting Ryoma’s gentle demeanor and the distinct, varied designs of the magical slimes he tames. Upon its release, the series gained a dedicated following for its departure from traditional high-action power fantasies, receiving praise for its focus on domestic slice-of-life elements and world-building.
