Kanai-kun

Kanai-kun is a poignant picture book created through a collaboration between celebrated poet Shuntaro Tanikawa and illustrator Taiyo Matsumoto. Published in Japan in 2005, the work emerged from a desire to address the complex, often unspoken experiences of loss and friendship from a child's perspective. The narrative centers on a young boy processing the death of his classmate, Kanai-kun, moving away from didactic moralizing to capture the raw, wandering nature of grief.

The book is distinguished by Matsumoto’s signature expressive style, which utilizes intricate line work and a subdued palette to ground the ethereal, meditative text provided by Tanikawa. The pairing was intentional, bringing together two of Japan's most respected contemporary artists to elevate the picture book medium.
