Kare-Kano, also known as His and Her Circumstances, originated as a celebrated shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Masami Tsuda. The narrative famously subverts the traditional high school romance genre by focusing on the complex, often neurotic psychological motivations of its protagonists, Yukino Miyazawa and Soichiro Arima. Its transition into a widely discussed cultural artifact was cemented by the 1998 anime adaptation directed by Hideaki Anno at Gainax, which utilized experimental visual techniques to mirror the internal monologues and emotional turbulence characteristic of Tsuda’s original work.

The series remains a touchstone for its departure from idealized romance tropes, favoring a raw and honest exploration of academic pressure, personal insecurities, and the evolving dynamics of teenage relationships.
