Where it came from
Published as a semi-autobiographical manga, this volume captures the daily life and cultural observations of Jean-Paul Nishi, a Japanese artist living in France, and his interactions with his French wife, Karen. The work emerged from the niche of cross-cultural domestic comedy, focusing on the often humorous misunderstandings and adaptations inherent in a bicultural marriage. Nishi utilized his distinct, expressive artistic style to translate the nuances of his personal experiences into a relatable narrative for Japanese readers curious about life abroad.
The series reflects a broader trend in manga that documents the personal experiences of expatriates, offering a grounded look at European life through an observant, outsider perspective. It was designed to highlight the comedic friction between Japanese and French customs, balancing candid storytelling with gentle satire. Upon its release, the volume was received as a charming and lighthearted piece of cultural commentary, praised for its authenticity and the warmth of the author’s perspective on his own domestic life.
