Where it came from
KBKJ, or Skyhigh, is a psychological manga series written and illustrated by Tsutomu Takahashi. Serialized in Young Jump in the early 2000s, the series centers on Iziko, a gatekeeper of the afterlife who offers the recently deceased a choice: move on to heaven, remain as a spirit to haunt the living, or accept a contract to return to the world of the living for one final act of vengeance.
Takahashi designed the series with a distinctively stark, high-contrast aesthetic that emphasizes the somber nature of his narrative. The work reflects the mangaka's signature gritty style, blending supernatural elements with raw human drama. It was well-received for its philosophical exploration of morality and retribution, eventually leading to multiple sequels and live-action adaptations that solidified its status within the seinen manga genre.
