Kemono Giga

Kemono Giga is a manga series created by the artist Koishi Chikasa, serialized beginning in 2017. The work draws thematic and aesthetic inspiration from the Chōjū-giga, the famous 12th-century Japanese scroll paintings that depict animals engaged in human activities. By bridging the gap between classical Japanese art history and contemporary manga sensibilities, Chikasa aims to revitalize these historical motifs for a modern audience.

The narrative follows a young boy who finds himself in a forest inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures, blending folklore with the pacing and visual style of modern shōnen adventure series. The character designs are noted for their clean, expressive lines and their ability to capture both the playfulness of the original historical scrolls and the emotional weight of a character-driven fantasy story. Upon release, the series was received as a charming and accessible homage to Japanese artistic tradition.
