Kinsou no Vermeil, known in English as Vermeil in Gold, began as a Japanese light novel series written by Kouta Amana and illustrated by Yoko Umezu. First serialized online in 2018 via the platform Gangan Online, the series emerged during a period of sustained popularity for the fantasy-academy subgenre of light novels. It centers on Alto Goldfield, a student at a magic academy who accidentally summons a powerful, long-sealed demon named Vermeil to act as his familiar, blending traditional magical schooling tropes with high-stakes supernatural conflict.

The character designs and visual tone were established by Yoko Umezu, whose illustrations emphasize a contrast between the academic, formal environment of the Royal Magic Academy and the more unrestrained, chaotic essence of the summoned familiar. The work received a manga adaptation in 2018, illustrated by Itsu Choko, which helped broaden its reach among international audiences.
