Where it came from
Kusumoto Maki’s Kiss XXXX was originally serialized in the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Margaret between 1989 and 1991. Emerging from the late Showa and early Heisei era, the series became a seminal work of the 'shoujo' aesthetic, celebrated for its departure from traditional romantic tropes in favor of a stylized, melancholic, and art-school-inflected atmosphere that mirrored the moody subcultures of the time.
The design of the work is noted for Kusumoto's distinctive, delicate linework and an emphasis on visual fashion that drew inspiration from the European avant-garde and the global post-punk scene. Upon its release in collected volumes, the series was received as a sophisticated, almost boutique entry in the manga landscape, garnering a devoted following for its focus on ephemeral youth, aesthetic ennui, and its refusal to adhere to standard narrative structures.
