Where it came from
Kizu darake no Akuma, or Scars of the Devil, began as a digital manga series serialized on the Comico platform in 2014. Created by Sumikawa Volvox, the narrative centers on a high school girl who transfers to a new school, only to encounter a former bullying victim who is now orchestrating a revenge plot against her. The work gained significant attention for its intense portrayal of school social dynamics and psychological torment, distinguishing itself within the shōnen and seinen thriller genres on digital manga portals.
The character designs and visual style reflect the gritty aesthetic typical of psychological dramas, focusing heavily on expressions of hostility and vulnerability to heighten the tension of the bullying themes. Following its success online, the series was adapted into a physical volume release and eventually a live-action film in 2017. The work remains a notable example of the transition from web-based digital serialization to traditional print publication within the Japanese manga industry.
