Knights of Sidonia

Knights of Sidonia was created by mangaka Tsutomu Nihei and serialized in Kodansha's seinen magazine Afternoon from 2009 to 2015. Developed following Nihei's acclaim for his architectural sci-fi works like Blame!, the series reflects his signature interest in brutalist structures and deep-space isolation. The story follows humanity's survival aboard a massive seed ship after the destruction of the solar system, utilizing a blend of high-concept space opera and biological horror elements.

The visual language of the manga is defined by Nihei's background in architecture, featuring cavernous, claustrophobic ship interiors and highly mechanical suit designs that contrast against the organic, amorphous nature of the antagonist Gauna. The work was widely praised for its unique aesthetic and cinematic pacing, eventually bridging the gap into broader mainstream recognition through a high-fidelity 3D anime adaptation that utilized cel-shaded computer graphics to mimic the density of Nihei's original line work.
